We had a great turnout for the End of Summer Picnic at Fabyan Forest preserve! There were about 20 people, including some we hadn't seen for a while and a couple of new friends too! Massage Bear Ken organized the bike riders and kept track of a lot of details, RolledHam Ryan managed the guest list and side dishes, and the other moderators, Ben and Steve kept things rolling. Elaine and Denise had practically a whole picnic left over from the previous weekend, so they made this one a breeze for us! And it was great to see everyone! What a beautiful day we had for it.
As I get settled in my new home, I'm going to attempt to host an event one Saturday in October, and Steve has offered someting for November. Tim and Bruce are open to another movie night at their place in Aurora, and we haven't had a dinner outing in a while, so maybe somebody wants to suggest a place and organize one! What do you think?

That's Right Every Thursday at Firewood in McHenry, its $5 32oz long island night... and there is a wide selection of long island variations to choose from.
Just because we are gay doesn't mean we're twelve stepping, so ditch the coffee until Friday morning, go out to the FW, and enjoy a night at a bar filled with breeders. (and the acoustic sounds of Josh Skaja) (after all, its not like this is a gay only event, Thursday night drunk is open to everyone!)

Thanks Lynne. I'll be out of town and unable to attend, and being mid-day I don't know how many others can, but I will make sure your notice is noticed!

Some of the other books have been in print longer, and we were able to get good deals on used or overstock copies. This is a newer release and there don't seem to be as many out there, but check these : amazon.com powells.com You can also go to your local library and see if they don't have it on the shelf, can they get it through inter-library loan. The good part would be that it is free, the bad part, it might take some time, or as a recent publication, it might not even be available.

I am a new member and I enjoy doing outdoorsy stuff (My partner Jim not so much). I was wondering how many people in this group also enjoy outdoor activities. I have wanted to go to Rainbow Valley Resort near the Wisconsin Dells. 4125 HWY 13, P.O.Box 487, Wisconsin Dells, WI 53965.
This GLB resort has suites and cabins, a pool and a restaurant and bar. We have never stayed there but I'll bet I could talk Jim into it.

This is not real camping, but it would be fun to get a group to go for a week end.

Hi all, this is the Jim that "UncleSnake" (John) keeps referring to. While Captain Dix is all gay-friendly, I think I might agree more with Ryan - it does seem more like a "club" style atmosphere. The suggestion for Holiday Shores campground sounds nice enough, but like John said, I am not into "roughing it." I'm with Mickey in the fact that if my hotel room does not have a coffeemaker, or I have to use a bath towel twice, that is roughing it! LOL However, that said, I would be up for giving this other campground a try, as long as I'm not freezing at night in the tent - warmer summer months for me. Anyhow, perhaps we can get a small group together and give this a try this summer.
Take care- Jim

Hello Group-
I had not been on the site for awhile and was looking through the Members section and noticed that there have been quite a few new members join since the first of this year. I just wanted to take a moment to welcome you all to the site/group - hope you can join us for one of the upcoming coffee nights or any other planned events. I am a relatively new member myself and have attended a couple of the coffee nights so far, but this is a really nice group.
Take care- Jim (aka Monkiwan)

I see Fran Bailey is hosting an event to discuss ways to oppose a gay-marriage ban in Illinois. She has asked Rick Garcia, from Equality Illinois, to speak at her home in Arlington Heights on January 10. (1619 S. Highland in Arlington Heights, 7 pm.) I believe I will attend, would anyone like to join me? She wants us to RSVP; I could RSVP for all of us.

I guess I ended up being the only one from this group that went to the event...there was a lot of snow, and I can't blame anyone for staying close to home. She had 74 RSVPs, but the weather brought attendance down to about 40, I'd say 2:1 men. Great pizza, and enjoyed meeting so many new people; there was no one there I'd ever met before. Rick Garcia, the legislative director for Equality Illinois (EQIL) spoke about the civil unions bill before the legislature. They ended up a couple votes short, so it wasn't called to the floor in the session that ended January 13, but it will be reintroduced January 14 for the next session. Unfortunately some of the "yes" votes they were counting on retired or lost their elections, so they will be working from a smaller number and trying to get to 60 votes in the Illinois House. EQIL decided to go after Civil Unions when they realized how long it might take to get Marriage Equality passed, and that many couples would be going without ANY of the protections married people have until that happens. So if Civil Union is an easier concept to sell to the legislature, get that first, win at least some rights for gay families, and then continue on to full marriage equality. Rick urged everyone to contact their state representative to ask them to support Civil Unions for GLBT couples in Illinois. Fran asked everyone to consider joining EQIL, by going to the website, EQIL.org. Memberships start at $35 per year. Also, I picked up some postcards for contacting legislators. There was no mention of another suburban gathering soon, but I bet it happens!

Hey, there's a lot of stuff, but the only catch is its tougher to organize people for social stuff, especially with gas prices. But this group does everything: Book club, laser tag, art gallery walks, concerts, game nights--the works! Come to our next coffee night or to laser tag next saturday at 6pm and find out that this place is pretty hopping for anyone who is willing to get up and go find the fun!

At coffee tonight (August 14) we talked about getting some things started for Fall. After the picnic this weekend, the only thing we have planned (aside from the usual bi-weekly coffee nights) is a First Friday Gallery Walk on September 5. A couple of ideas that came out tonight included:
Starting a GLBT Book Club. We'd choose a book a month. We would likely choose one of the Thursday nights when we do NOT have coffee to gather and discuss the book. The last activity at each monthly book club session would be to choose the book for the following month.
Laser Tag followed by pizza or another meal. Those who didn't choose to do Laser Tag could just show up for the meal.
Karoake someplace...anyplace. Probably just all showing up for an existing Karaoke night in some local establishment.
Vince has never been to Hunters, but we were split as to whether he ever NEEDS to see Hunters.
Dinner. Return to Tivoli Ristorante in West Chicago. Return to Thai Zie in St. Charles. When will the new Tapas place open on Third Street in Geneva? Where else?
So we could use some feedback on these ideas, as well as some new ideas. Please post something, and it wouldn't hurt if you'd give us an idea as to whether you would like to organize an outing, or simply want to suggest something for Ben to organize!

Here are some of the things we are interested in the next month or so.
9/6/2008 - The Great Urban Race - Bob, most likely has to work. So I wouldn't mind if two or three people wanted to join me. The scavenger begins at noon in Lincoln Park. Only rule is that during the scavenger hunt you must use public transit, no cars, or taxis. If you want to join me on Saturday email me for more details and contact information. Web address: http://www.greaturbanrace.com/
9/20/2008 - American Maker - Make magazine is looking to discover the most innovative makers/inventors whose work has the potential to benefit others. American Maker is a live, day-long program that highlights grassroots innovation in local communities around the country. Web Address: http://www.makezine.com/american/
9/28/2008 - Tour Historic Galena Homes - Bob and I are planning on doing this. We have room for two more people to join us. We plan to make a day out of it and hopefully meet up with Wayne for lunch or dinner.
9/27/2008 - October 12, 2008 - Wired Next Fest - WIRED NextFest is the premier showcase of the global innovations transforming our world. Now in its fifth year, WIRED's gallery of the future includes unique and bold exhibits of sustainable design, next generation healthcare, interactive art and games, humanoid robotics and more. Web address http://www.wirednextfest.com/
10/8/2008 - Brain Bowl - Inspired by high school and college Quiz Bowl competitions, Wired Brain Bowl will pit Wired editors against two teams: one, Quiz Bowl all-stars from Chicago-area universities and two, a team of celebrated Chicagoans.
Also we wouldn't mind having people over for a game/coffee night some time in October. That date however is still to be determined.
